Many of the guests who return to Chautauqua year after year describe it as an experience rather than a vacation -- a place for renewal. So where better to renew Encore's traditions than to return to the Chautauqua Institution for our first summer camp in two years, in August of 2021?
The Chautauqua Institution was founded on the belief that everyone “has a right to be all that he can be -- to know all that he can know.” Encore agrees and that's why we have been returning to Chautauqua since our very first camp there in 2008. The end of August in Chautauqua is a tradition as old as Encore itself. It's easy to understand why if you've spent an evening on the porch of the Athenaeum Hotel sharing wine and conversation with fellow Encore singers. Here's how a Chautauqua newcomer described her first Encore camp experience: "I felt like I was in a majestic palace surrounded by gorgeous flowers and homes and the lovely lake. It was my first time there and I was in awe about the whole experience. Spot on! So, once again, after a one-year COVID hiatus, we return to Chautauqua this year, from August 29th to September 3rd, 2021.
This Encore program will be conducted this year by Encore's Founder and Artistic Director Jeanne Kelly, joined by Associate Artistic Director David Simmons, whom everyone has gotten to know through his dynamic Encore University classes. Choral music will be a mix of traditional choral music, as well as rocks selections.
To facilitate social distancing, all rehearsals and classes, as well as the final concert will be held in the 4,000 seat open-air amphitheater. Special indoor or outdoor dining will be offered. Also, for everyone's safety, participants will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and will be required to wear specially provided singers masks at all rehearsals, classes, and the performance..
Each day will begin with a morning movement class, followed by a full choral rehearsal and an afternoon opportunity to enjoy the surroundings. There will be vocal technique classes and sectionals, as well as full rehearsals twice a day. Each evening we will enjoy a relaxing dinner on the porch or in the parlor, followed by evening recitals and programs from artists of local and national reputation, to give participants a flavor of the “in-season” Chautauqua experience.
The program will conclude Friday afternoon when we perform a choral concert for friends and family in The Amphitheater. This is always a wonderful finale!
