The Eastern Shore of Maryland is a beautiful place, and Chestertown is one of its jewels. With a colonial history dating back to the 17th century, Chestertown, Maryland is proud of its maritime heritage. Sitting on the banks of the Chester River, sailing ships can still be seen coming into port. The city is the home of the Schooner Sultana, an exact replica of an 18th-century ship that served in the British Royal Navy, now operating as an educational vessel. Washington College has plenty of history itself having been founded in 1782 with major funding by General George Washington, who also lent his name to the new institution.
Washington College continues to be a summer tradition for Encore as we kick off the season with the first of four summer "sleepaway" camps. Encore campers will have five days to immerse themselves in all this history while having a great time learning and performing new music, culminating in a grand concert for family, friends and local residents of the Chestertown, MD area.
This year will see the return of ever-popular conductor/instructors Mary Ann East and David Lang, who led last year's camp.
Each day will begin with breakfast to energize us for a morning that will include movement class, followed by a full choral rehearsal in the superb concert hall in the Daniel Z. Gibson Center for the Arts. After lunch there will be an opportunity to enjoy the surroundings, relax, or participate in vocal technique classes or sectionals – it’s your choice.
A full afternoon rehearsal rounds out the daytime schedule. Singers may be seated for rehearsals and performances.
All meals will be provided in the campus dining room with a variety of offerings to please every palate. In the evening, we will keep you entertained with exciting performances by artists of national and international reputation.
Singers will find comfortable accommodations in the residence halls with suites that include single bedrooms with a twin bed in each, shared bath, and common areas with kitchens and lounges. Couples, or a singer with guest, may elect a double room with two twin beds in a suite setting.
