What kinds of music do you sing?

Our fall season is typically focused on a holiday music program since our concerts are performed in December. We select songs that touch on Christmas and Hanukah, but lean toward more seasonal secular music versus sacred music. In the Spring, the sky’s the limit! We sing Broadway, oratorio, American Song Book, spirituals, even a little opera. It’s a great mix and we always include a surprise or two to keep our singers – and our audiences – excited and surprised by the repertoire. All music is performed in four (SATB) or three (SAB) parts.

In October 2015, Encore was proud to introduce Encore Rocks! a Rock & Roll chorus singing the greatest hits of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Encore now has six Encore ROCKS! locations in the DC area, as well as a ROCKS chorus in New York City as of March 2018. This program is proving to be very successful and will continue to expand.

Must I be an experienced singer to join an Encore program?

Definitely not! Encore Chorales and Encore ROCKS Choruses are comprised of people who have sung with organized groups for many years, as well as people who have never sung with a group before. Some didn't even know they could sing! Some can read music; some cannot. The objective is simply to have fun, but in a unique and challenging way.

Must I audition for an Encore Program?

Absolutely not! No auditions and all are warmly welcomed. We believe everyone has something valuable to offer.

I can't stand for long periods of time. Will that be a problem?

No problem. We sit for all reharsals. However, if you prefer to stand, we have participants who do so and stand in the back row. This also applies for our performances.

Must I be able to read music to join an Encore program?

No, but the more you sing, the more you will learn about reading notes. It is not as hard as you may think. It's a great way to keep challenging your brain. Practicing with your sheet music and the accompanying CD can be very helpful in this regard. Encore also occasionally offers sight reading classes for a nominal fee.

Are rehearsal and performance venues handicapped accessible and friendly for older adults?

Yes. We select our locations with that in mind.

What do singers wear for performances?

For Encore Chorales: Women wear all black - dresses, shirts, tops (no sleeveless). Skirts and dresses should be tea length or long, with black hose and shoes. Men wear dark slacks and jackets, white shirt and tie (wild is good!), dark socks and shoes.

For Encore ROCKS: All wear dark (black) slacks or skirts and a bright solid colored shirt/blouse or a bright solid colored scarf.

It's always best to double check concert attire requirements before specific concerts as there may be changes, e.g., when performing joint concerts with Encore Chorales, Encore ROCKS attire may be changed.

I must miss a rehearsal on my usual day. May I make up a missed rehearsal at another nearby Encore Chorale or ROCKS Chorus?

As a general rule, yes, you can make up rehearsals at another Encore location. However, some locations have restricted access. For example the Goodwin House Chorale is open to residents only. It's best to check with your conductor to be sure the location you want to attend is open to you. When you arrive. please introduce yourself to the conductor or the chorale master and explain that you are doing a make-up.

If you feel your concert preparation would benefit from an extra rehearsal or two, you're also welcome to attend rehearsals at a "non-home" location.  This is an added benefit of your participation in Enocre progrrams, where other groups are available in your area.

I can’t make it to the first two rehearsals in the upcoming season – may I still join?

Yes! Contact our office to let us know of your situation and we will make a note to hold music for you. We recommend that anyone who cannot make the first 4 weeks of rehearsals consider waiting until the next season to join. Coming in after week 4 as a new singer will be challenging. Not impossible, but challenging. Feel free to call our office to discuss your situation.

What’s your refund policy if I have to leave the chorale for some reason mid-season?

When payments are made directly to Encore, tuition refunds will be given on the following schedule:

  • Cancellation prior to the 1st rehearsal – full tuition refund.
  • Cancellations during weeks one through four of the season – prorated tuition refund minus $10 per rehearsal held, regardless of your attendance, minus a $25 materials/administrative fee.
  • No tuition refunds will be given after week four of the season.

When payments are made to one of our sponsoring organizations, such as Anne Arundel Community College or Washington Conservatory of Music, their refund policy for the class will apply. Encore does not prorate the tuition for those who miss classes. A liberal make-up policy allows for singers to make-up missed classes with other Washington DC area chorales. Contact the Encore office for specifics.

I’m new to four-part choral singing. Do you have any aids that will help me learn my part?

Yes we do! Each season we create a rehearsal CD for each voice part of all of the songs for the season. This is provided to you at no additional cost. This has proven to be tremendously helpful for singers who want to practice their part at home between rehearsals. We encourage practice at home!

What forms of payment do you accept for tuition?

For those Encore programs for which you pay Encore directly, you may pay with cash or check at your first rehearsal.  We also accept credit cards via PayPal on our web site.  Online registration for those programs is located HERE.  Some of our programs are under the auspices of a sponsoring organization, e.g., AACC, Washington Conservatory at Glen Echo, Langston Brown. Registration and payment for those programs is per the requirements of the sponsoring organization. Links to those locations' registration pages are generally provided in our rehearsal schedule information on our home page during the registration period.

I have limited means. Is financial assistance available?

Yes! We welcome everyone and can make tuition assistance available to those in need. Contact our office for more information.
