Summer Fun with Encore

Chautauqua Colorful Women1Unlike many choral organizations, Encore doesn't take the summer off.  Every year, Encore offers five- or six-day Summer Institutes, or "Summer Sleep-Away Camps," as the singers like to call them.  The days are consumed by morning exercise or yoga classes, choral rehearsals, sight reading classes, and vocal technique workshops, just to name a few of the activities.  In the evening, Encore brings in a variety of musical performers, from classical, to American Song Book, World Music and more.  This is also a great opportunity for singers to socialize and get to know each other.

Encore has been returning annually to Chautauqua Institution, NY for twelve years, and for the past several years to Washington College in beautiful Chestertown, MD.  In 2018, Encore offered its first-ever Rock & Roll Camp in historic Annapolis, MD, repeated successfully in 2019, and headed to Cleveland and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. A fourth Summer Institute will be added in Colorado in 2020.

Participation in Encore's summer programs is not restricted to current Encore singers.  Anyone over the age of 55 with a desire to participate is welcome to attend.

Kick Off Encore's Busy Summer in Historic Chestertown, Maryland

Join Us at Washington College in Historic Chestertown, Maryland for the 12th Annual Encore Chorale Maryland Summer Choral Institute from June 21-25, 2020

Wash College

The Eastern Shore of Maryland is a beautiful place, and Chestertown is one of its jewels. With a colonial history dating back to the 17th century, Chestertown, Maryland is proud of its maritime heritage. Sitting on the banks of the Chester River, sailing ships can still be seen coming into port. The city is the home of the Schooner Sultana, an exact replica of an 18th-century ship that served in the British Royal Navy, now operating as an educational vessel. Washington College has plenty of history itself having been founded in 1782 with major funding by General George Washington, who also lent his name to the new institution.

Washington College continues to be a summer tradition for Encore as we kick off the season with the first of four summer "sleepaway" camps. Encore campers will have five days to immerse themselves in all this history while having a great time learning and performing new music, culminating in a grand concert for family, friends and local residents of the Chestertown, MD area.

This year will see the return of ever-popular conductor/instructors Mary Ann East and David Lang, who led last year's camp.

Heading West: Camp in Colorado this Summer!

Encore is coming to the Rocky Mountains July 19-23, 2019!

CSUEncore is joining forces with our Denver area affiliates to bring the Encore "Camp Experience" Out West. The Encore Chorale and Encore ROCKS Summer Institute at Colorado State University in Fort Collins is our newest summer "camp."

Why Fort Collins?  According to their visitors' web site, "you can get a feel for settler life in the well-preserved downtown Fort Collins district that includes over twenty restored historical buildings that are part of both national and local designated historic districts. Included is the Northern Hotel, a Fort Collins landmark that was restored to its former “Art Deco” elegance. While wandering about downtown you’re likely to notice a strong resemblance to Disneyland’s Main Street USA: we’re proud to say that it is modeled after our own Downtown Fort Collins!  The alleys have been upgraded into European style walkways with potted flowers and Tivoli lights making the journey to the next place a beautiful experience of its own."

Leading the program will be Jeanne Kelly, Encore's Founder and Artistic Director, and Brian Leatherman, conductor of Encore's Highlands Ranch and Littleton Chorales.  Participants will sing both traditional choral repertoire and Rock & Roll hits.  Singers will perform a final concert in the beautiful Griffin Concert Hall.  You can't beat the beautiful Rockies and fabulous music!

Rock On in Cleveland This Summer!

Encore ROCKS Summer Institute to Include the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame August 9-14, 2020!

RockHallIn two short years, Encore's ROCKS Summer Institute has become the most popular of all Encore's summer camps.  In 2018 and 2019, Encore rockers took Annapolis by storm and each camp was a complete sellout. Everyone had a ball, but don't take our word for it. Here's what one participant said: It's the gestalt of the experience...immersion in the music, the social engagement, the dancing in the evening, Jeff's approach which helps us learn so much in a week, we also laugh a lot, and the sense of accomplishment when we reach the concert. I thought it was a fabulous concert and camp!

This year promises to be even better as Encore journeys to Cleveland and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Where else could be better?  This incredible week will include educational sessions on the history and culture of rock and a "pop up" concert on the veranda of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as a tour of the museum. Singers will be diving deep into the melodies, harmonies and rhythms of the rock repertoire during fun and intensive twice-daily rehearsals, followed by evenings full of fun activities and entertainment.  Singers will ROCK ON with the fabulous Back Traxx Band, who played the Woodstock 50th Anniversary at Rock Hall, as well as enjoy a boat cruise and other entertainment activities.

The camp will culminate in a rockin' finale concert in downtown Cleveland!

Jeff Dokken, Encore ROCKS Conductor Extraordinaire, looks forward to taking this show on the road to give Cleveland a taste of what Encore is all about! LETS' ROCK!!

An Encore Tradition: End of Summer in Chautauqua

KEL 3464 1

Many of the guests who return to Chautauqua year after year describe it as an experience rather than a vacation -- a place for renewal. The Chautauqua Institution was founded on the belief that everyone “has a right to be all that he can be -- to know all that he can know.” Encore agrees and that's why we have been returning to Chautauqua since our very first camp there in 2008. The end of August in Chautauqua is a tradition as old as Encore  itself. It's easy to understand why if you've spent an evening on the porch of the Athenaeum Hotel sharing wine and conversation with fellow Encore singers. We asked last year's singers, "What did you especially like?"  One person's response: "I felt like I was in a majestic palace surrounded by gorgeous flowers and homes and the lovely lake. It was my first time there and I was in awe about the whole experience. Spot on!  So, again, we return to Chautauqua this year, August 30th to September 4th, 2020.

This Encore program will be conducted this year by Encore's Stephen Harouff, joined by David Simmons, new to Encore this year. David comes to Encore with impressive credentials from years of conducting choral organizations in the Washington, DC area.

Encore's Chautauqua camp draws singers from across the country interested in improving their vocal technique, rehearsing challenging choral music and spending a week in a beautiful setting with fellow music lovers.
