In Fall 2015, Encore Creativity for Older Adults announced its expansion into the Denver area with the formation of The Highlands Ranch Encore Chorale! The Highlands Ranch Encore Chorale is a non-auditioned community chorus founded by and under the leadership of Brian Patrick Leatherman, Artistic Director and Conductor and Cindy Runkel, Executive Director and Accompanist.
The unique Encore Creativity program emphasizes the social, physical and mental health benefits of singing and is open to anyone “55 and better” who is interested in a fun and challenging musical adventure, with or without prior choral or singing experience. The repertoire includes arrangements of popular music, show tunes, and other favorites that will appeal to singers and audience members alike.
Brian Leatherman, Artistic Director and Conductor
BRIAN PATRICK LEATHERMAN leads a multifaceted life as conductor, teacher, singer, and clinician. He has just completed his 22nd Season as Artistic Director & Conductor of Denver's Cherry Creek Chorale, a thriving community chorus of 140+ members.A fully certified OrffSchulwerk teacher, Mr. Leatherman recently retired after 30 years as a vocal/general music specialist, the last 15 in Douglas County, CO schools. Students and adults under his direction have performed at the National Conference of the American OrffSchulwerk Association and the Colorado Music Educator's Association annual Clinic/Conference. He continues to be active as a choral clinician and adjudicator.
Mr. Leatherman has appeared as tenor and countertenor soloist with the San Juan Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, Colorado Springs Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic, Aurora Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Fort Collins Symphony, Breckenridge Music Institute Chamber Orchestra, Cherry Creek Chorale, Colorado Chorale, Columbine Chorale, Colorado Repertory Singers, Larimer Chorale, Pueblo Chorale, Desert Chorale of Santa Fe, the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, and the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus. He holds degrees in Music Education (B.S.M.Ed.) and Choral Conducting (M.A.) from Colorado State University and cites as his two greatest influences, Barbara Grenoble in pedagogy, and Robert Shaw in conducting.
Cindy Runkel, Executive Director and Accompanist
CINDY RUNKEL began musical training with her father while in kindergarten, then studied piano with Elizabeth Pastor, concert pianist and faculty member at The Cleveland Institute of Music and Ashland (OH) University. Ms. Runkel served as accompanist for her award winning high school choral program and received multiple college scholarships, including a full piano scholarship to Miami University (OH). There she held various choral leadership roles, accompanied and sang in multiple ensembles, performed in two European concert tours and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.
Cindy currently serves as both Principal Accompanist and Executive Director for one of Colorado’s largest adult community choruses, the Cherry Creek Chorale. She performs professionally throughout the Denver area for a variety of public and private events, at senior living communities and churches, and has served as accompanist for Chorus of the Rockies , a Road Scholar / Elderhostel, Inc. experiential choral program for seniors.
