Joey Hoopengardner is the conductor for the Southern Maryland Encore Chorale. Joey taught choral music in the St. Mary’s County Public Schools for 33 years. He has been the guest conductor and adjudicator for various elite honors choirs and choral festivals across the state of Maryland. Early in his career, as a founding member of the Hollywood Harmoneers, Joey recorded six studio albums and traveled the Eastern seaboard performing with his gospel band. He served as the musical director at Lexington Park United Methodist Church for over 20 years.
Joey directed the St. Maries Musica choral group for seven years. He is currently the musical director and conductor of the live orchestra for St. Mary’s County’s Summer Stock Theatre, having held that position for 18 years.
During those years he has directed a variety of shows including Les Miserables, Hairspray, Crazy For You, The Music Man, Beauty and the Beast, and in the summer of 2017 – Oklahoma.. He also currently serves as the musical director at Community With A Cause, a church designed to minister to special needs individuals and their caregivers. Joey earned a BS in Music Education from the University of Maryland and has done graduate work at Towson University and George Washington University. Joey resides in Hollywood, MD with his wife Pauline.
