  • Mary Lou Prince Conducts Salt Lake Chorale

mary_lou_prince_photo-1Mary Lou Prince is pleased to have led the effort to bring an Encore Chorale to Salt Lake. The Chorale, which she conducts, began rehearsals in September 2013.

Mary Lou Prince brings 35 years of professional experience as a conductor, composer and music educator to the Salt Lake Encore Chorale.  In Arizona she created two choirs for older adults, the Santa Rita Chorale and the La Posada Singers.   In addition to their regularly scheduled public performances, The Santa Rita Chorale became part of the community by singing at memorial services in the Tucson Medical Center Hospice Chapel and by participating in Interfaith Worship services around the Tucson area.  Performances of Prince's music by the Chorale raised money for residents of the city dump site in Nogales, Mexico, "Comin' Home", an organization in Tucson dedicated to helping homeless veterans find permanent housing, and to the Red Cross for victims of the tsunami in Japan.

In 2010, Prince formed a women's chorus to perform music that she composed for the musical theater piece "Man from Magdalena".  All of the singers were over the age of 60, one of them was 83.  From 2010-2012 the play was performed in three states and 50% of all gross proceeds were sent to micro loans in Mexico and Central America through the organization Kiva.   Proceeds from performances have now underwritten over $70,000 to small business owners in those countries.

The La Posada Singers were residents of a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Green Valley, AZ.  They performed annual Autumn and Spring concerts, and sang monthly to residents in the care facilities on campus including Assisted Living, the Alzheimer's unit and the Full Time Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Prince lived in Kanazawa Japan for 24 years, composing and performing music for Japanese instruments.  She and playwright Patty Willis co-founded a theater group and performed collaborative work at international theater festivals in Japan, Scotland and the U.S.  Her work won national composing awards and was featured on NHK Television, BBC Radio, Voice of America, Asahi Television and Kanazawa television stations.  Prior to her time in Japan, she lived in Los Angeles and taught choral music in elementary, junior high and high schools, music history for UCLA Extension courses, and conducted church choirs.

She holds a Master's Degree in Music Composition from Brigham Young University and spent a year in Paris studying composition with Nadia Boulanger.

The Chorale rehearses Thursdays 2:00-3:30pm, at the South Lake Community College South City Campus, Annex Building, 1610 South 250 East. Free parking is available: Enter lot at 200 E and Kensington Avenue and go to the southeast corner.  You may register on this web site or simply arrive at the first rehearsal. Jeanne Kelly, Founder of Encore, recently received this email note from a Salt Lake City Encore Chorale Member:

    Dear Ms Jeanne,

May I comment on the remarkable experience it is for me to participate in the SLC Encore Chorale, a leg of your Washington D.C. brainchild.

The idea of a substantive choir appealed to me, but I doubted I would have the time to really join.  I learned of it within the grace period to “audition” the choir as the director invited.  Whatever thoughts I had about being too busy for joining vanished once I was there that first day; fun with preliminary breath-control exercises and the spontaneous dry humor from director Mary Lou Prince sold me.

As the weeks progressed, I realized I felt true happiness through the experience – and was aware to elusive elements of satisfaction/joy that I hope for from life, but that can evade me when overly committed.  I grow from Lou’s manner and directorial skill as well as her compositions and music choices.  Those qualities, along with the core purposes for which you formed your DC group – bringing life more fully to the sometimes "disenfranchised" elder population – have made affiliation with Encore Chorale soooo worthwhile.

Living a year in China, and having my then 80-year-old mother join me for travel at the end, gave a vast contrast to how the aged are regarded interpersonally in the USA.  There, she was magnet to kind young women and families wanting to talk.  It healed much within her to be noticed and sought out, after publically feeling like that "little old lady over there," despite still running her own venerable small-business operation that she would soon retire from a half-century after its conception.

Our December 2013 choir performance lifted awareness of what CAN be done by those who have lived to a full age and are repositories of remembered skills that yet reside in our bones.  Even if our tone was not spot-on, we handled the tricky rhythms with fair aplomb – thanks to Lou!

Another (Winter 2014) “semester” has begun with similarly welcome challenges.  Today, we rehearsed two splendid compositions from Ms Prince in addition to YOUR great music choices that pass on to us.

I truly esteem the concepts you have pioneered, and also want you to know I love Mary Lou’s personality and expertise as conductor and composer.  Thank you, indeed!!!

    Gloria

  • A Personal Story from Mary Lou Prince

Thanksgiving Day, 2010, and we were going to share the holiday with our "Arizona Mother" Marj and her husband Bill.  Just as we were about to begin our preparations for dinner that afternoon, the phone rang.  It was Bill.  He said "you'll be the first to know that Marj has had a stroke and is on the way to St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson.  No need to come, you won't be able to do anything."

We said "we'll see you there."  Marj was in a room at the ER, unable to speak.  After some minutes of feeling totally helpless, we decided to start singing to her.  She was a member of The La Posada Singers, a group I had formed at a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Green Valley, Arizona, and I knew all of the songs that she knew.  I started with "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and when I came to the last word "roses", I left it out for her to fill in.  She did it!  Then I started leaving the last phrases of songs for her to fill in.  By the time we left the hospital that day, she had been able to sing the last part of several songs.

We visited Marj every day for the next 14 days of her hospital stay.  Every day she was able to do a little more with singing, and then her speech started to come back.  With the help of physical and speech therapy, Marj was able to talk again and recover beautifully.

I started conducting choirs for older adults in Arizona in 2007 after living in Japan for 24 years where I worked as a composer and performer.  Every aspect of my work with the choirs in Arizona was deeply rewarding.  I loved to bring challenging music to the singers and witness their sense of satisfaction when they were able to perform it well.  They loved to see my face when they performed it well!  I took every opportunity that I could to take my choirs into the community for performances.  A rural health center was going to have its grand opening and I got my choir on the program.  A beloved friend was in hospice care and I arranged for the choir to stand around her bed and sing to her.  We performed benefit concerts for Mexican families who lived in a city dump.  We raised money for homeless veterans and tsunami victims in Japan.

Last August I moved to Salt Lake City, the place where my Danish ancestors on my mother's side and my English ancestors on my father's side came in the 1800s.  Although I was raised in Los Angeles, I am finding that I have deep roots here.  I am very excited to be the Salt Lake Affiliate of Encore Creativity and bring the work of Jeanne Kelly to this place.  My work in Arizona showed me the power and sense of purpose and well being that choirs can bring to the singers and the audiences.
