DAROn Saturday, May 13, 2017, Encore will celebrate its Tenth Anniversary with its largest concert ever at DAR Constitution Hall. Nearly 800 singers will perform before an expected audience of over 3,000.  The logistics of this event will be daunting. To help ensure everything goes flawlessly, Encore is providing singers with a detailed fact sheet - everything you need to know to make the most of this special day.

DAR CONSTITUTION HALL FACT SHEET

Encore’s 10th Anniversary

DAR Constitution Hall Concert on Saturday, May 13, 2017 and

10th Anniversary Party on Friday, May 12th, 2017

On your mark, get set, go! Encore’s DAR Constitution Hall Concert will be both exciting and challenging. Flexibility and a sense of adventure will be required! This is a first-time experience for all of us, and patience will be the word of the day. Oh, the stories we will be able to tell! We are anticipating close to 800 singers!

Here are all the details you need to know about your DAR Concert experience!

Date: Saturday, May 13th, 2017

Call time for all singers: 12:30pm

Concert time: 3pm

Time: All singers are expected to ARRIVE ON TIME NOT LATER THAN 12:15pm and be ready to rehearse by 12:30. (THIS IS A CHANGE. Original call time discussed was 1pm so 12:30pm is the new call time) PLEASE ALLOW AMPLE TIME FOR TRAFFIC, PARKING AND WALKING TO THE HALL. WE MUST BEGIN ASSEMBLING ON TIME. Singers will enter at the D Street Entrance which will be the only unlocked entrance for singers to enter into the building.  Rehearsal will be from 12:30 to 2pm. Doors open to audience members at 2pm. Audience entrances will be open on all three sides of DAR Constitution Hall at 2pm. The D Street entrance is handicapped accessible. Concert is 3pm to 5pm.

What to bring: Bring your music in your black concert folder. Purses and bags should be no larger than a gallon-sized zip lock bag that can be stored under your seats in the auditorium. There will not be a locked dressing room. Singers will keep their belonging with them EXCEPT WHEN THEY ARE ON STAGE. BRING ONLY YOUR MUSIC TO THE STAGE. Singers should leave valuables at home or with a friend or family member. It will be a long day so bring water and small snacks like granola or protein bars. Water is permitted in the auditorium. Snacks must be eaten in the lobby.

What to wear: Black Concert attire. Ladies-black pants or skirt with black top. Or, black dress below the knee, hose, shoes. No large sparkles on clothing or jewelry. Men - Black or dark suit, white shirt and colorful tie. ROCKS singers-black concert attire with colorful tie for men and colorful scarf for women. ROCKS singers who are also singing in an Encore Chorale will be only adding a colorful scarf to their black concert attire.

Performance schedule: All singers will have a seat upon arrival at the concert hall and will be directed about where to sit by ushers. Singers should proceed to seats and not come onto the stage until directed. All singers will have an opportunity to sing on the stage. The concert will begin with ½ of the singers on the stage and the rest of the singers singing from their auditorium seats. During a small intermission, ROCKS singers will come to the stage to sing their repertoire while Chorale singers take their seats. After ROCKS Chorus sings, the other ½ of the Chorale singers will come on stage for the second half of the concert while the other half of the Chorale singers sing from their audience seats. The conductors will be determining when you will be singing from the stage based on acoustics and making sure to have a balanced sound and proper number of soprano, alto, tenor and bass groupings.

Singer tickets: All singers are required to have a ticket. All tickets will be distributed at rehearsals to singers several weeks prior to the concert. All singers will be given a "performer" ticket and will be allowed into DAR prior to the 12:30 call time. Per safely regulations from the DAR facility, no guests or audience members will be allowed into the building until 2pm. If guests drive with singers, they will have to do some sightseeing prior to 2pm. There will be no exceptions.

Seating: All singers will have a seat in the Concert Hall upon arrival. You will be leaving your possessions on or under your auditorium seat during rehearsal and performances. There will be no access to locked dressing rooms. You will not be bringing your items on stage. While we are sure that your items will be safe, we suggest that you leave valuables at home. If you would be upset to lose it, don’t bring it.

Restrooms: There is a small men’s and ladies’ restroom behind the stage for performers, however, these restrooms will not accommodate our large-sized group for use as the main restroom. (Having 800 performers is very unusual for the DAR!). A handicapped restroom is located very close to the stage in the lobby closest to the D Street entrance. The main restroom is located off the main lobby and down a full flight of stairs.

Concession stand: There will be a concession stand for drinks and snacks for singers and audience members. Singers should bring their own water and small snacks to avoid waiting in line, but it will be available to singers should you need it. No food is allowed in the theater. 

Security and Ushers: Encore will have excellent support from trained Security Personnel and Ushers who are familiar with DAR. Should any questions or problems occur, there will be staff close by to answer questions and be of assistance.

Who is allowed on stage: Only singers, musicians and staff are allowed on stage. No guests are allowed on stage before or after the concert for photos or to greet singers. Singers will need to meet their guests in the auditorium or in the lobby after the performance. If singers are riding busses back home, they will not have a long time to visit with their guests. Busses will leave promptly.

Concert video: The DAR Concert will be professionally videotaped and photographed and once edited, both will be available for viewing on Encore's website.  

Exiting the concert hall: After the concert, busses will pick up singers on a staggered schedule. Bus riders will be notified independently about the departure times for their bus once we are closer to the concert date. This will be based on the total number of busses that end up being filled.

Special note: Singers may be arriving while the stagehands are still setting up equipment prior to the concert. We ask that you not interrupt their work. All questions or concerns should be directed to Encore staff only.

Guest tickets: All requested guest tickets will be distributed to singers along with their “performer ticket” several weeks prior to the concert to distribute to their guests. To start, each singer has been allotted up to 3 guest tickets per singer. If you already completed the survey, we already have your guest tickets reserved for you based on the number you requested at the time you completed your survey. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to be placed on a wait list for additional tickets. You will be notified about whether you will receive extra tickets after April 1st. They will be distributed in the order in which requests were added to the wait list. We are hoping to have enough space for everyone who wants to come!

No one will be allowed into DAR without a ticket. Guest tickets will be used to enter the DAR Constitutional Hall building, but seating in the theater is general seating. 

Instructions for guests: Guests are not permitted into the building until 2pm. Concert begins at 3pm. Audience entrances will be open on all three sides of DAR Constitution Hall at 2pm. The D Street entrance is handicapped accessible.

As a courtesy, cars can be left on the premises at each location only if information is provided during registration, including the make, model and license plate number of your car.  We are so grateful to these locations for allowing us to utilize their lots.  We are encouraging carpooling or ride sharing to and from these locations, if possible, to cut down on the amount of cars that will be left for the day.  Encore is required to provide the make, model and license plate of your car to each location and all other cars are subject to being towed.  Please have this information available when you register for a bus. Each bus ticket is $30 per person for a round trip ticket. One-way tickets are not available. Spaces on the bus are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The Southern Maryland, Frederick, Asbury, and Goodwin House chorales have arranged their own bus transportation for interested singers. If you sing with one of these chorales, please ask your Chorale Master for details. If you do not see a bus stop for your chorale location, it means there were not enough interested singers to support renting a bus for your location.  To register for a bus from one of the six locations, Click Here.

Driving and Parking: Most of our singers have indicated that they will be driving and parking in one of the local lots or taking the metro. Note some garages allow you to reserve parking in advance through Parking Panda, Spot Hero or other online services. You are strongly advised to reserve your parking ahead of time. The parking lot on 18th and G is the closet and largest parking lot. (5 block walk) Price per car is approximately $25. Click here for more parking choices.

Metro stops: Farragut West is the metro stop for the blue and orange lines. This is on 18th and I Street, 7 blocks away from DAR.  Farragut North is the metro stop for the red line. This is on 17th and K, 8 blocks away from DAR.

As of September 2016, Encore has fifteen Chorale locations in the DC/VA/MD area, as well as five new Encore ROCKS locations. Additionally, Encore continues to expand across the nation, with Affiliate Chorales at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson, OH; Reading, PA; Northeast Iowa School of Music, Dubuque, IA; Littleton and Highlands Ranch, CO; Santa Clarita, CA; and six in the Chicago area. With over 1,200 singers, we believe we are the largest choral organization in the U.S.!

If you have sung sometime in your life, want to return to singing, or have never sung outside the shower, join our other music enthusiasts for weekly instructional class/rehearsals with our seasoned and professional conductors.

The Chorale classes, designed for adults 55 years and above, are educational as well as enjoyable. Participants learn proper breathing techniques and how to improve their voice through correct tone production as their conductor guides them through weekly rehearsals in three- and four-part singing. The season concludes with combined performances with other Chorales as well as local concerts at most Chorale locations.
